Chris Fischer, star of the popular History Channel show “Shark Wranglers,” is coming to Cape Cod to hook great whites in the name of research. But critics are warning that his tactics could be killing the toothsome beasts of the deep.

captain-onigiri-usopp asked: Bullsharks are also extremely territorial and aggressive. That's why I got chomped by one lol but anyways, just wanna say how much I love this blog. Great pictures of sharks, and educating information for those who don't know much.
thecaringconservative asked: In addition to the last ask about non-provoked shark attacks, I've heard that great whites will bite to taste the prey then release, but bulls will just chomp away. Personally I love great whites so much I'm itching to swim with them. But anywho! I hope you're having a wonderful day, this is an awesome blog!
bound-for-the-waves asked: First off, I love sharks. I am constantly reading up on them just because of my fascination with them.I've read two different things as far as attacks go. So, I was wondering if you could clear up the confusion for me. I've read in some places that they will attack just to attack. I've even see a video clip of what looked like a shark attacking without being provoked. But, I've...

Great white sharks under review →
A predictable, but nevertheless sad and troubling, step taken by authorities in Western Australia…. Some facts for the Western Australia Fisheries Minister to think about: the number of shark attack fatalities in Australia averages 0.92 per year, while in 2010 there were 111 fatalities in the workplace in Australia, or an average of 49.5 per year for the period 2002 through 2010.

mockingnerd asked: If the grey nurse/sand tiger observed was regularly swimming with his dorsal fin above water it sounds like it lacked sufficient support on either side to keep it straight (like adult male orcas in captivity).
the-tabularium asked: Hi! I was wondering, do you know of anything about dorsal fin collapse in sharks? I was recently at the local aquarium and noticed that one of the larger males circled with his fin above water and it wasn't rigid? It stood upright underwater but collapsed as soon as it hit the air. He was a Grey Nurse Shark, quite large as well. Cheers, -tT

Volkswagen building Beetle Shark Cage in honor of... →
Cute idea…mostly about branding…but comments like this “But, apparently, VW and Discovery also had some difficulty relating a small, German hatchback to a large, voracious, man-eating fish” do nothing but reinforce the myth that sharks are, well, voracious man-eating fish. Nothing could be further from the truth. Some 450 people every year die falling out of bed in the US...

Shark teeth have built-in toothpaste... →
An in-depth look at shark teeth has found that they contain fluoride, the active ingredient of most toothpaste and dental care mouthwashes.
It helps to explain why sharks are so effective at either tearing or cutting prey. Their teeth are perfectly designed for such tasks, never suffering from cavities, according to the study, recently published in the Journal of Structural Biology.

“Your chances of encountering a white shark are extremely slim,” said George Burgess, curator of the International Shark Attack File and director of the Florida Program for Shark Research. “For the last several years, we have been averaging only five white shark-related deaths worldwide per year.”

A study involving Murdoch University and Shandong University at Weihai has found distressing trends in the catch and trade of threatened whale sharks in China.
Results indicate whale sharks are increasingly being targeted due to high demand for large shark fins and a rising appetite for shark meat in general.

Around the Table: Shark's Fin, Whale Meat and the... →
But the fishy, bloody stench of whale meat? Bland, gooey strips from a mutilated shark? There’s no accounting for personal preference, but I find it hard to imagine that these are really flavors we crave.
